JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Alex: The jail contained a basketball court and I was
able to watch tv, play cards, read books, and
attend church services. Javier: You are provided with books, cards, chess,
checkers, cable T.V., and a basketball court. You
can also sign up for GED or Culinary class if allowed.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Alex: I did not have regular access to the
entertainment. For example, many people always
wanted to watch tv and we often times had to
vote on which channel would be watched. Javier: Access was always pretty good. Though youre always
sure to get that man who will hide the cards or
chess board.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Alex: I did not have a hard time staying in shape
while in jail. We did not have weights, but I
was able to keep lean by doing calisthenics. Javier: Yes. It is a great place to go if you want to shed
some pounds but if you are very into being fit i
feel for you. You don't eat right and there is no
gym. You basically have to stick to calisthenics
if you want to exercise.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? Alex: I was able to go outside daily for up to eight
hours. Javier: Rarely. It depends on your Block Officer and then
on your Sergeant. In the 6 months that i was there
i only went out on the yard 3 times.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Alex: Church services were offered on Sundays. The
setting was similiar to that of a small, simple
church or classroom. Javier: Yes they did. I'm not very religious so i never
went but i do know that they were offered a lot
and you could even receive free bibles and reading
material of all religions.
