Life On the Inside The inmate population of the Leon County Jail consists of pre-trial, pre-sentenced, county and state sentence men and women. There are also juvenile offender who are been charged as adults. All totaled, the Leon County Jail can hold up to 1,000 inmates in 16 separate cell blocks. The inmates are segregated based on the type of offenses. For instance, sex offenders and violent offenders are kept out of the general population. Upon arrival each inmate is provided with an inmate handbook. There is nothing left out of this handbook. In fact, inmates are even provided with a diagram as to the proper way of making their bed. Speaking of which, that bed has to be made whenever it isn't occupied complete with shower shoes neatly placed next to each other pointing outwards from the bed. They are very serious about this! For meals, inmates are given the option of a regular tray or a vegan tray. To accommodate certain religious convictions no pork is served ever. A canteen is available for inmates to order snacks from. Orders are written out and filled once a week. It's not like there is a store they can pop in on anytime. In terms of recreation, inmates are allowed to watch TV or go outside once a day. They can also socialize by playing cards, dominoes or other board games. Good Behavior Policy For the general prison population there is no such thing as time off for good behavior. However, if an inmate is granted trustee privileges they can receive up to days off each month. Trustee status is given to prisoners who demonstrate good behavior and willingness to participate in education and work programs. Visitor and Telephone Policy Visits occur at Leon County Jail throughout the week from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon and again between 5:30 and 7 p.m. An inmate can put up to five visitors on their approved visit list. This list can be changed on the last day of each month for visits in the upcoming month. Every inmate is allowed to have up to five visits a week that are 30 minutes each. Visitors much present an official state issued ID card. Unless the jail is on lock down, the inmates are also given access to phones located in each of the unit. They can make outgoing collect calls only. These calls can only be 15 minutes in length. Continue to the interview |
